Forecasters from BBC Weather and the Met Office both say snow could fall over parts of the UK before the weekend – three areas in particular are at risk on Friday

Forecasters at BBC Weather say snow could fall in several parts of the UK this week, potentially even reaching southern regions before the weekend.

In its outlook for tomorrow, BBC Weather says Brits can expect “prolonged spells of rain” pushing into northern regions. “Heavy rain and hill snow” is on the cards for Scotland, whereas southern regions can expect “bright” spells initially before “showery rain” later in the day.

“Further patchy rain” can be expected on Thursday, with “brighter” conditions on the cards in the far north. However, also on Thursday, BBC Weather says some “wintry” showers might develop over coastal areas.

Moving onto Friday, BBC Weather suggests three areas are at risk of snow – southern hills as well as north and east coasts. Its forecast states: “Friday could see spells of rain and hill snow in the southern half to start, with snow showers pushing into north and east coasts through the day.”

BBC’s forecasters expect a “crisp” and “bright” day for many on Saturday, which is Valentine’s Day. However, “wintry showers” could linger over eastern coasts.

BBC Weather adds for Sunday: “A new frontal system from the Atlantic should start to bring milder air and rain on Sunday, although preceded by sleet and snow over higher ground, mainly in the northern half of the UK.”

The Met Office outlook for the rest of this week also suggests snow is to come for some. For tomorrow, the Met Office says conditions will remain “largely cloudy with outbreaks of rain for most”. Conditions in the north will be “fairly windy and cold”, with the south “feeling mild”.

In its outlook for Thursday to Saturday, the Met Office adds: “Unsettled at first with further outbreaks of rain. Turning colder from Friday with a chance of snow showers, particularly in the north. Dry, cold and sunny for many on Saturday.”

Forecasters at BBC Weather have warned there is a risk of flooding in parts of the country next week. The BBC forecast for February 16 to 22 states: “The widespread cold will be temporary, with high pressure to the north most probably weakening and even getting replaced by weak low pressure developing near Iceland by the end of the week.

“That should allow broadly south-westerly wind flows to develop at times, bringing milder air across the UK. Although Scotland may still be chillier with temperatures close to seasonal overall, or slightly below. There is higher confidence for a milder period in southern regions of the UK.

“This more Atlantic-influenced regime will bring periods of wet and windy weather as frontal systems cross the UK, and above-average rainfall amounts are expected. This could mean further risks of local flooding, particularly in parts of southern and south-western UK, and in South Wales. There could be snow on the colder leading edge of these rain bands, especially over higher ground in northern areas.”

And again, there is also a chance of snow. It adds: “There is a signal for high pressure to build over the eastern Atlantic between weather systems, delivering brighter but chillier interludes with some wintry showers on north to north-westerly winds.”
