Barclays customers have been unable to access their bank accounts after the banking app goes down.
Customers began reporting issues using the mobile banking app and making and receiving payments this morning, and by lunchtime, over 1,000 customers reported issues with the app, according to Downdetector, a website that tracks internet outages. At the height, over 1,200 people were reporting problems.
The site says over 54% reported issues with their mobile banking, while 38% had problems with online. Around 7% of the population were facing issues with paying bills. The outage comes on the final day of the month, which happens to be payday for millions of Brits. More than 10million people use the high street bank’s digital services, with one-third only using mobile services to manage their finances.
The Barclays Service Checker website confirms that there are issues with its banking app, online banking, messaging system, telephone banking, and payments and transfers today. The statement reads: “We’re sorry, we’re having some issues with our systems and you may have trouble using some features in our app. We’re urgently working to fix this. Thanks for bearing with us.”
The website also reported issues with its bank branches, adding, “We’re sorry. We’re having some issues with our systems this morning, and we’re urgently working to fix this.”
A Barclays spokesperson said: “We’re aware that some of our customers are experiencing problems using some features in our app, online banking and with payments in and out of their accounts. We’re sorry for this and are working hard to fix the problem. As soon as it’s resolved, we’ll let our customers know.”
Customers soon took to X – formerly Twitter – to share their frustration on the problems today. One X user said: “LOL can’t pay my tax bill – what a day to have system issues.” Another shared: “#barclays online systems in utter chaos, my January wages were paid in, then disappeared…after I paid off some bills so potentially now over my overdraft…that’ll be fun fighting that I am SO glad I paid my tax bill on Wednesday and I sympathise with anyone paying it today.” A third added: “Absolute joke. I’m so sick of Barclays. I’ve been with you for about 20 years and seriously thinking of switching banks! Can’t even get onto the status checker!”
