A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous after a pregnant woman lost her baby in a horror ‘hit-and-run’ crash.

The suspect, from Walton le Dale, Lancashire., was taken into custody late last night following the tragic incident on September 29 just before 8pm. The victim, in her 30s, suffered serious injuries in the collision when she was struck on a pedestrian crossing in Bamber Bridge, Lancashire, and shunted around ’30ft’, according to local residents.

She was rushed to hospital where she had emergency surgery to deliver her baby boy, but police have since revealed that he passed away. The woman, who is thought to have been 30 weeks pregnant, remains critically ill.

Police said they have now recovered a Toyota Prius from an address in Bolton, Greater Manchester, which is believed to have been involved in the fatal crash and allegedly did not stop at the scene. They earlier arrested two boys, aged 16 and 17, and a 53-year-old man, all from Bamber Bridge, in connection with the incident, who have now been bailed.

A 17-year-old girl from Lostock Hall, and a 40-year-old man from Blackburn who were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and attempting to pervert the course of justice have now been released pending further enquiries. While the 19-year-old man from Bolton remains in custody on suspicion of the same offences. Police said they still want to speak to anyone who saw the car before or after the collision and any person with CCTV of the incident.

Detective chief inspector Andy Fallows, from Lancashire Police, said: “My thoughts first and foremost remain with those affected by this horrific incident which has resulted in the death of a little baby and has left his mother very poorly in hospital.

“We have made good progress in our investigation and I am grateful to all those who have come forward with information so far. I would continue to appeal to anyone who thinks they can help to get in touch.”
