Filming wrapped on the final series of Grantchester last month but the producer of the much-loved series – which is even more popular in the US – has hinted it could be back
The makers of Grantchester revealed they are open to cutting a deal with Netflix, if the streaming giant wants to buy the show beyond its 2027 contract.
Screened on PBS in the US, Grantchester receives its main funding from the MASTERPIECE Mystery! anthology series in the US.
In July, figures revealed it has an audience demand 10 times the average for US shows, placing it in the top 2.7% of all TV shows shown in America.
And writer Daisy Coulam has written an “open ended” finale for the 11th series, meaning it could return.
Meanwhile, Grantchester executive producer Emma Kingsman-Lloyd hints she would be tempted co-produce the show for Netflix if the budget is right.

She says: “Some big American shows get millions and millions per episode and it goes up every year. On Grantchester, we stay at a level and it gets harder and harder to make at that budget level. But if Netflix are listening it would be lovely if they were to give us £10million an episode!”
Whatever the future holds, Robson Green who plays DI hopes fans will hold Grantchester in their hearts after the final curtain comes down in 2027. And they can keep the spirit alive simply by walking around Cambridge and drinking in some Grantchester’ locations.
Robson says: “We were told by Daisy Coulam, our writer, ‘Nothing really ends. Not really. The River Cam will keep flowing and swans will keep swimming. And if you look in a Cambridge pub hard enough you might see two old men, an ex-copper and a vicar having a warm pint and putting the world to rights. It is never goodbye.”
It was announced in the summer that the 11th series of Grantchester would be the last. The popular ITV programme features Robson, 60, as Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, whose character teams up with vicar Alphy Kottaram, portrayed by Rishi Nair, to crack cases in the Cambridgeshire village.
Robson previously lavished praise on his Grantchester co-stars, reflecting on how the team evolved into much more than just a cast and crew but an entire community brimming with support and commitment.
“I won’t say goodbye because, for me, it will remain a beautiful lifelong connection. I have made friendships forged through shared laughter, challenges, and triumphs. “The bonds we’ve formed extend far beyond the camera lens, and I am confident that they will endure long after the final scene within the Grantchester world has been filmed.”
