UK supermarket Aldi has recently announced that it will make a major change to the self checkouts by allowing customers to purchase their National Lottery ticket at the till
The well-loved grocery chain, known for its affordable prices, has announced an exciting update to its self-checkout systems: customers will soon be able to purchase National Lottery tickets directly from the machines.
This significant change will be implemented in UK stores at the end of Spring. At the self-checkout kiosks, customers will be able to purchase lottery tickets, including Lotto Lucky Dip, EuroMillions, Thunderball, and Set For Life games. Aldi will be the first supermarket chain in the country to offer this service and is working with National Lottery operator Allwyn on the service rollout.
Customers with a National Lottery Fast Pay card can buy tickets and scan their card to produce personalised tickets. An Aldi colleague will conduct an age verification check before shoppers can finalise their transaction at the self-service screens.
Richard Thornton, Aldi’s Communications Director, said, “Customers will now be able to enter The National Lottery while doing their weekly Aldi shop.” He added, “We hope to hand out some winning numbers to lucky customers across the country.”
On average, the National Lottery generates over £30 million each week for good causes and projects across the UK. This funding supports various initiatives, from food banks and renovating local Scout huts to assisting Olympic and Paralympic champions.
Jenny Blogg, Retail Director at Camelot, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to now be working with Aldi. Making The National Lottery available in its stores has been a priority for us as we continue to make playing The National Lottery as convenient and easy as possible for people, wherever and however they shop.”
“We’re pleased that Aldi customers will now have a quick, easy and convenient way to purchase their favourite National Lottery games, while at the same time contributing to the £30 million that goes to National Lottery Good Causes each and every week. We certainly hope there’ll be plenty of lucky tickets bought in Aldi stores across the UK.”
Punters celebrate this shift in grocery shopping with The National Lottery, which is currently sold at most post offices, supermarkets, and newsagents but never before at self-checkouts. The self-checkout marks the second significant announcement Aldi has recently made.
The grocery chain announced in January that it will open nine new stores in London this year as part of a £55 million investment in the M25. Shoppers in Wimbledon, Fulham Broadway, Caterham, and Orpington will benefit from a new Aldi store in 2025.
