The budget supermarket has removed all stock from the shelves with a sign explaining why
In a show of patriotic solidarity, a sign has appeared in an Aldi store announcing it has removed one of its bestselling items from shelves. The decision to remove stock from the supermarket has been noticed by shoppers online, who have shared their opinions on Instagram.
Ahead of tonight’s (July 15) FIFA World Cup 2026 game, where England will go up against Argentina, Aldi has temporarily axed its popular Argentinian Malbec from shelves as a lighthearted joke. England’s highly anticipated semi-final clash against Argentina will determine whether the Three Lions players will make it through to the final showdown on Sunday, July 19.
According to Aldi’s latest Instagram post, shoppers visiting the store’s wine aisle today will find empty shelves where the popular red wine usually sits. The wine has been replaced by a sign explaining why it has vanished.
The sign reads: “We have removed our Argentinian Malbec from the shelves in solidarity ahead of the game tomorrow.” At the bottom, it adds: “It’s coming home!”
An Aldi spokesperson said: “Whether it’s a tactical substitution or the ultimate superstition, the sign encourages shoppers to bench their usual Argentinian reds for alternative bottles to toast Thomas Tuchel’s men tonight. Those looking to toast to England’s success this evening night can pick up any of Aldi’s non-Argentinian wines in store now.”
On Instagram, Aldi uploaded an image of the sign after a customer spotted it in their local store. Aldi responded to say: “The only thing NOT coming home is your nice bottle of vino (soz x).”
In the caption, Aldi added: “If this doesn’t help us win, we don’t know what will.” The post has since gone viral, with more than 15k likes and hundreds of comments from fans.
In the comment section, one person said: “Your creative team are brilliant!” Another wrote: “Now I respect Aldi even more.” A third put: “Patriotism before Profit. Well done.” Another claimed: “Worked for us when @Greggs_official removed all Mexican flavoured items!!”
Remember to drink responsibly. The UK Chief Medical Officers recommend drinking no more than 14 units a week, spreading this evenly across three or more days, and having several drink-free days each week.
