Duty manager of the acclaimed Daffodil Hotel in the Lake District has revealed her secret tips to making your home look and feel like a five-star establishment – and it’s easier than you might think

Go from amateur cleaner to pro with this hotel manger’s top tip.

Ever stepped back from a Sunday morning of non-stop cleaning only to feel slightly underwhelmed? Yes, the crumbs in the kitchen have been swept up, the sides have been wiped down and the sofa cushions plumped, but it still doesn’t feel immaculate – like when you walk into your hotel room and take a second to soak in just how perfectly neat everything is.

If you’re wanting that five-star level of cleanliness in your home, we’re here to help. You don’t need any fancy cleaning products or industrial-grade chemicals; it’s all about the little details, and making sure you follow one simple rule… Kate Henderson knows a thing or two about cleaning, currently working as duty manager at the Lake District’s Daffodil Hotel in Grasmere. According to the Express, she says Brits should ditch the fitted sheet if they want an ultra chic finish to the bedroom.

“When do you ever see a fitted sheet in a hotel? When you opt for a plain sheet you can easily recreate a ‘hospital corner fold’. Lift the edge of the sheet to form a 45-degree angle with your mattress. Pull and tuck the hanging fabric underneath the mattress.” The cleaning ace says you can also use this method for your duvet, reminding everyone to ‘simply lift and tuck’.

It may seem a little extra, but ironing your sheets can really approve the appearance of a bedroom. After all, you won’t find a single crease in a five-star hotel. “Another tip is to relax any unwanted wrinkles with some fragranced water,” she said. “Simply spritz your water on your almost-made bed (keep the corners sticking out) and spray and shake your sheet or duvet until smooth and wrinkle-free.”

One of the key differences between a home and a hotel is having your personal linens on the bed. This is a particularly nice touch if you have guests staying over and want them to feel ultra pampered. Fold or roll your towels and even pyjamas and place them neatly on the bed for an added element of luxury.

Reflective surfaces also need extra care and attention, and can make ‘a world of difference’ to your home. Kate recommends focusing on your windows and mirrors to make sure they’re not marred by streaks. “For an easy option, use watered down vinegar or lemon spray on your mirrors and tiles, spray this everywhere, then wash down with water, wipe away,” she added. “Then as a final step, be sure to use a cotton or microfibre cloth to buff in a circular motion to avoid any streaks.”
