A massive pileup has shuttered the A1 this morning, causing huge expected rush hour delays after four police and one civilian car were involved in a horror crash.
The huge collision on the major traffic artery at around 2.30am today took place on the northbound carriageway near Denton, Newcastle, as commuters travelled into work.
Dramatic pictures taken at the scene show damaged police vehicles and a civilian car seemingly flipped on its side, with debris scattered across the length of the road.
National Highways said in a statement following the incident that the road between junctions 73 and 75 will likely have to shut beyond rush hour, with motorists asked to follow diversions.
