Bella Culley walks free from prison in Tbilisi
Bella May Culley, the teenager facing drug trafficking charges in Georgia, has been pictured leaving court after being freed from prison.
The 19-year-old, from Teesside, was seen walking with her mother, Lyanna Kennedy, outside the court. Culley, who is eight months pregnant, told reporters that she did not expect to be freed today.
Culley was arrested on 10 May this year at Tblisi airport in Georgia after 12kg of marijuana and 2kg of hashish were found in her luggage. She initially faced a possible 20 years in prison, but prosecutors sentenced her on Monday to five months and 25 days in prison, the time she had already spent in custody.
As part of a plea deal, her family also paid a fine of 500,000 lari (about £140,300). Prosecutor Vakhtang Tsalughelashvili told The Associated Press that Georgian prosecutors were considering a two-year sentence, but “decided to consider the time she has already served”.
