Bosses at Aldi are looking at several priority locations across the UK

Supermarket chain Aldi has published an updated list of priority locations across the UK where it is wants to open new stores. The UK’s fourth-largest supermarket is looking to expand on its mission to offer affordable food to more local communities.

The company recently invited the public to suggest areas they felt were most in need of an Aldi. After sifting through thousands of responses, the retailer has now set out a list of priority towns and cities. Currently operating over 1,050 stores across the UK, Aldi has set its sights on having 1,500 outlets.

The supermarket is investing £1.6billion in an expansion plan for its store network, aiming to bring its “unbeatable value” to even more communities. Giles Hurley, CEO for Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Shoppers are still finding things difficult and that’s why we’re staying laser-focused on doing what Aldi does best – offering customers great quality products at unbeatable prices.

“Nobody else is making the same commitment to everyday low prices – no clubs, no gimmicks, no tricks – just prices our customers can trust, and quality they can depend on. Since we opened our first UK store more than 35 years ago, we’ve brought high-quality, affordable groceries to almost 800 towns and cities, but there are hundreds more communities that don’t have an Aldi nearby.

“We’re more determined than ever to meet that demand, and that’s why we’re investing a record £1.6bn over the next two years, to bring Aldi prices closer to millions more customers.” A new store location needs to be able to accommodate a 20,000 square foot store with some 100 parking spaces.

Ideally it should be situated near a main road with good visibility and access. Aldi is also wants to expand its Aldi Local offering in Central London zones 1 and 2.

These smaller stores need just 5,000 square foot of trading area plus 3,000 square foot of surrounding space.
